I am Here. This is my Body. I am Waters...
and I am Peace. I am safe. Three short Films. For You.
Lutruwita
Sometimes called Tasmania.
A tiny film of 1.11 mins. Made on a misty-rain morning in May 2017.
At Binalong Bay, near the ‘Bay of Fires’.
A morning both sad and deeply beautiful.
Clicking on the image will take you to the film.
The gorgeous and heart rending music is by Kitka, from the Sanctuary: A Cathedral Concert album. The piece is called Szombateste búcsúztató. This is only the first bit of it.
I’ve made another film using this music and a sister piece form the same album; a film made from a single tree: the Fig Goddess. A Tree sacred to me.
A film about the sacred She. You can find that film via the Button below.
Made 2021, Duration 7.30 mins.
Over the past few months it seemed I had much I wanted to share with you. Joy, to share. And then, things changed. I’ve been reading Charles Eisenstein’s Substack on the matters at hand. I’ve been listening to Deepak Chopra on his IG, and his Soul of Leadership free offering. I’ve been re-reading my beloved countryman’s works, Tim Winton, and his calming idiosyncratic Australian idiomatic language on his visceral experience of this country, specifically in ‘Island Home’, and ‘The Boy Behind the Curtain’.
This land . . .
This land which breathes my body alive. For many decades I’ve said, ‘when I stand on the beach, I know who I am’.
Water. Sand. Rock. My mantra ~
And I will add Light (and temperature and humidity and wind).
I will add Mud
I will add Seagrass
I will add all Ones with whom I am entangled. Emplaced.
Listened to. Seen. Heard. Felt. Known.
I made this image exactly four year ago, on Darkinjung Country (Bouddi National Park, near Gosford NSW). Near my birthplace on Gadigal Country.
Sandstone Country. My bones, my skin, my endothelial heart lining. A galaxy swirling into a human being. Being sung into form.
As many of you know I’ve been curating a body of work these past 5 years or more. The Saltwater Songlines Project. This past month, the first of the two Halls breathed completion. Four huge Rooms. For now, simply as a digital immersion on a website. Later . . . who knows. A book? An installation exhibition? Live walks on country? Other callings . . . .?
I listen. I sense. I hear. And then I move ~
For now only the images and their curated Story is ready. The words are coming. And when they are, you will hear about it.
The final of the three films in this newsletter
was made yesterday.
It is 5.30 minutes long. A series of videos and stills, made on my beloved Quandamooka County. It is a requiem of sorts. An elegy. To waters. To land. To earth herself. To and for us. Initially for comfort, for peace. For all ~
But the films I make always have their own voice, and as I listened to the invitation to create it yesterday, and spent the day making it, other voices wove through.
The music is the exquisite sound of ‘On the Nature of Daylight’ by Max Richter. My son introduced me to the film ‘Arrival’ (with Amy Adams) at the time I walked Darkinjung Country -turning 60 - and made the image above, standing in a swirling nebula of sandstone. The film, speaks in fact, the essence of The Saltwater Songlines Project, and how my small body has always known country; Language. A Language without Sound. Rippling through me. I call them ‘Codes of Consciousness’, these ripples in sand and rock that imprint my fascia and haemoglobin be-jewelled blood (thank you Genny Kapuler, senior Iyengar Teacher in NYC xx). Language etched in country from which my body (your body!!) knows itself:
Home.
Watch the film ‘for water and her presence’ by clicking the image below. There are a few film notes below the film on Vimeo via the link.
I will switch the comments on, for this post.
Speak only kindness, care, respect, dear Ones.
Speak to one another, and to me, as you would have your own tender heart be spoken to itself.
All Love,
Narelle xo
If you would like to offer a donation of support in the meantime you can do so here. This link takes you to my Stripe, where you can choose what you offer via a formal dedicated Invoice. Thank you. So much xox
Narelle, thank you for these three films. At this particular moment.
I am so moved by the music and by the voices of country, water, life, love.
And oh, that blue jellyfish!
